4/11/1895     74 Recd. Letter from Franz Rahtkens & Co. enclosing account of S. S. John Redhead's Aug. 15 to

Nov 1st showing much to their

[p 75] regret, balance in ship's favour now £185.0.5 has with four cargoes carried but

                        increased by a few pounds.

Letter contd. from p.66 [sic] Recd. from Franz Rahtkens

The extremely low rates of freight still prevalent, & the continued heavy back calls of the

Mutual Insurance Clubs are, of course, mainly to blame, & whilst these may be more easily

borne by larger more modern boats it seems, with the low freights now ruling & the S. S. John

Redhead's general impracticability & heavy consumption, so impossible to do any further good

that we would suggest to our co-owners to sell the boat as speedily as possible.  We are the

more persuaded to make this proposal as No. 3 Survey, always heavy & costly, is now due, &

as there are no funds in hand to betray it.  Will you be kind enough to favour us with your

                        views as early as possible.

[p 76} Copy of letter recd. July 22nd 1895 from Messrs. Franz Rahtkens & Co. - we have not

yet been favoured with your reply to our circular of the 6th. inst. & would now beg to submit

the proposal already assented to by a large majority, of selling the boat to a Norwegian

Company of limited liability to which we shall be glad to receive your consent.  Scrip would be

issued for your share, & of course afford complete security. - Several of our neighbours have

already done so with considerable advantage.  (signed F. Rahtkens)

Mr. Schoof has ansd. same & consented to it being sold.
